I teach at IES-Vienna, an institute that offers semester-long and year-round programs for American university students, our core constituency. I developed and teach two courses in the fields of history and cultural studies:
- Vienna’s Victuals: A Cultural History of Food and Drink in Austria
- Museums and Public History
Every semester I devise a range of activities and excursions to help my students experience Vienna beyond the classroom. I emphasize the interplay between material culture and immaterial cultural heritage in both classes while fostering students’ abilities to use a wide range of sources with confidence in their writing.
Perhaps most importantly, I integrate the city of Vienna as a “primary source” in its own right into both courses, and work closely with a range of institutions in Vienna, from museums to breweries, to enrich students’ experience of Vienna.
In the past I’ve taught courses on representations of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and on art, film, and literature in Berlin.
