Book-Length Projects

Dissertation (2012):

Memorial Sites and the Dynamics of Historical Experience in Berlin and Tokyo takes up the question of what, how, and for whom past events are memorialized. It compares museums in Berlin and Tokyo that commemorate the Second World War, and explores how people involved with these institutions represent the past in line with a particular conception of national identity. Recipient of Cornell University’s Messenger-Chalmers dissertation prize. PDF here.

Book project (in preparation):

Beerscapes of Germany blends the practicality of a guidebook with the insights of cultural history to tell the story of Germany’s dynamic beer scene. It guides readers to Germany’s iconic breweries, taverns, and beer gardens, and introduces them to traditions like Frühschoppen (a morning beer and bratwurst), along with regional festivals that add spice to the seasons.

Book project (future):

Designing Historical Experience for Contemporary Berlin brings together urban history and city planning. Through the lens of development projects that have sprung up since the fall of the Berlin Wall, this book considers how Berlin’s topography can reveal what a particular society chooses to remember or desires to forget.
